Since my update to Thunderbird 5.0, Spamfighter no longer works.

I have tried to instigate a "repair" but it still fails.

I have the same problem and  have received the following from Spamfighter Support :

"SPAMfighter doesn't work with Thunderbird 5 just yet.
The newest version of Thunderbird (v.5) features certain changes which make it a bit more challenging for SPAMfighter to integrate into Thunderbird.
We are currently working with engineers from the Mozilla Messaging team (which looks after Thunderbird) to add more robust support in SPAMfighter for upcoming Thunderbird versions.
I do not know when exactly we will be ready. I will send you an email as soon as we support Thunderbird 5."

Thank you, Tony.

That is very helpful.

For now I have switched on Junk Mail in Thunderbird 5.0 to compensate for the loss of Spamfighter. Shame really!

Thank you Tony. I had sent Support a message about it as well, but never received a response back. I am sticking with Thunderbird 3 till they get Spamfighter working in 5.

I would really like to know though why it is that Whenever Thunderbird does a major upgrade, we Spamfighter users always have to wait for spamfighter to catch up? It's not like Thunderbird just springs the upgrade on people. They do release beta versions prior to the release just so companies like Spamfighter can have an upgrade ready. For some reason, it seems like Spamfighter waits until Thunderbird releases the new version before working on a patch.

Spamfighter - Can you answer this question please?

I have also reverted to Thunderbird 3 until this is sorted out.

Re. your other point - in all previous updates of Thunderbird when the Spamfighter Toolbar disappeared I have been able to restore it by activating the 'Repair' option of Spamfighter - but this time this did not work - Spamfighter seems to be completely incompatible with Thunderbird 5.

We can only wait and hope that the Support promise to "add more robust support in SPAMfighter for upcoming Thunderbird versions" will do the trick for the future.

That is true for version 3 of Thunderbird.  As of Spamfighter version 7.2.50, you should have no longer needed to do the repair option either after doing a Thunderbird incremental upgrade. When Thunderbird went from Version 2 to Version 3 however, it killed Spamfighter until Spamfighter released a new version, even though they had plenty of notice of the upgrade. We are now in a similar situation with Thunderbird going from version 3 to version 5. Also, if Thunderbird will be following Firefox, their will soon come out with version 6 of Thunderbird. Will we finally get a patch to get Spamfighter to work with version 5 of Thunderbird, just to have it die again when version 6 comes out?

The biggest issue was that Thunderbird had done some major code revisions that prevents Spamfighter from working with the new version of Thunderbird. If Thunderbird does more internal changes in the future, this will be an issue for Spamfighter as well. I understand this and do not have an issue with it. My issue is with the fact that Spamfighter was well aware of the change from version 2 to version 3 of Thunderbird and were not prepared for when it happened, so we had to wait for a couple of months for a Spamfighter patch. Now again, Spamfighter was well aware of the change from version 3 to version 5 of Thunderbird, and had plenty of time to work with the betas to have an update ready for when Thunderbird did the change, yet Spamfighter dropped the ball again.

hope that the Support promise to "add more robust support in SPAMfighter for upcoming Thunderbird versions" will do the trick for the future.

The robust support will work for incremental upgrades, even if the version number changes, yet if Thunderbird does more major change to their underlying code, this will disrupt Spamfighter. The question is, will Spamfighter stay on top of any major changes that Thunderbird is contemplating and have updates ready for when Thunderbird makes any major changes in the future.

This is really disappointing. Again....

I think we have to recognise that Spamfighter is really not intent upon supporting Thunderbid. Even prior to Release 5.0, it was necessary to carry out a repair each time Thunderbird was updated.

I wonder whether the licensors have just lost interest in the project. It's a pity because it was astoundingly efficient. I have now increased the level of Spamcop intervention as a substituted for the loss of Spamfighter.

I think you hit it.

I have pretty much given up on Spamfighter.  I decided having to reinstall Spamfighter (30+ minutes at a pop) whenever Thunderbird was updated. I switched my email over to Gmail App's and haven't looked back.

Plus the money stays in the US and not flows out of the country.

Spamfighter has been playing catchup with Thunderbird for as long as I have been using it - Its been over a month now since release of Thunderbird 5 - I think I will abandon Spamfighter so that i can apply Thunderbird updates as they arise.

but if you use Lightning Calendar, you can't revert to TB 3 it's no more compatible.

Sorry Spamfighter but this is not professional, for what i paid for? For the time that we can't use Spamfighter, you have to extend our licences!!

The best bet is to stick with thunderbird for now.

New features in Thunderbird 5.0 include a revised account creation wizard and new add-ons manager. Bug fixes and interface tweaks round out the changes.
